Setting up your microphone

Piano listens through your phone's built-in microphone — no external mic or interface is needed. Position the phone a few feet from the instrument, ideally propped up rather than lying flat, so the mic has a clear line to the sound.

A quiet room helps more than mic placement does. Background noise — a TV, conversation, an open window onto a street — competes with the instrument in the same frequency ranges pitch detection relies on, so minimizing that matters more than fine-tuning distance.

Both acoustic and digital instruments work fine, since Piano listens to audible sound rather than reading a MIDI signal directly from the instrument itself.
